Рой и Иззо договариваются о возможной совместной серии
North Carolina and Michigan State officials are in preliminary talks to schedule a basketball series between the elite programs.

North Carolina and Michigan State have played in various high-profile games in recent years. UNC is 6-0 against MSU since Williams returned to Chapel Hill for the 2003-04 season.

Я двумя руками "за". Отличная идея.

NOTES

* The game is first to 80 points, and seemed to take longer than usual to get to that 80-point mark. That speaks in part to the lack of a well-rounded scoring arsenal on the White team, but also had to do with the Blue team settling for jumpers (and Felton clearly not going all out on the offensive end - which was probably kind of him considering his opposition was White and Davis),

* The first half was more open, end-to-end, and the White team held its own - leading 40-39 at the half. But the size and physicality of the Blue team was the difference in the second half. The Blue squad, while not a balanced lineup, was a group of grown men - Noel, Terry and M. Williams especially had a big size and muscle advantage and used it to clamp down defensively in the second half.

* Bullock looked like the floor leader today. He handled the ball a lot and was the team's best playmaker. He's not a big threat in this environment either to take it to the rim in the halfcourt, but he was taking a variety of jump shots, from short runners to mid-range pullups to three-pointers. And his contributions went far beyond the points - he had his share of assists, steals and rebounds. There's a poise and maturity there that speaks to his development. He's an upperclassman in more than title.

* McDonald found his offense in the first half, particularly from the perimeter, but struggled a bit in the second half. Showed no lingering effects from the knee injury. He was at a big disadvantage with the matchups, as his defenders were taller and a lot stronger, which made it tough to get off threes and tough to drive.

* McAdoo still isn't going to post up deep and make many back to the basket moves, but he made a big impact offensively in this game. He took a lot of face-up jumpers from various spots on the floor and made strong moves to the basket, which is going to be key if he doesn't utilize many traditional post moves.

* Hairston still isn't shy with his jumper. Hit a few early and then struggled to find consistency. In the second half he put the ball on the floor and hit a mid-range jumper, which seems to be a key component that he needs in his arsenal to become more than just a long-range launcher. Didn't see any signs of the shoulder injury.

* Hubert had good moments on both ends of the floor rebounding, and made a couple nice blocks. On offense, he never attempted to become a threat to score.

* Davis was solid in the halfcourt and had the one nice drive, but was not much of a threat offensively beyond that. Seemed ok with just doing a good job running the offense. Worth noting that Felton presented a big challenge.

*Strickland was in practice clothes and shooting around but did not participate in the game.

Pickup Game Revelations
Изображение
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Leave it to the old guard to provide the 2012-13 UNC basketball roster with some early instruction during the summer’s first big pickup game this week.

While various media outlets have North Carolina flirting with a top-10 preseason ranking to open next season, the former players that return to Chapel Hill every summer made it clear that the current group of Tar Heels have plenty of work to do.

The games are played first to 80 and the Blue team – the older guys – won 80-59.

“They just ran out and guarded Leslie [McDonald] and [Reggie Bullock] and didn’t let them get an open look,” head coach Roy Williams told reporters during his summer press conference on Thursday. “They got their tails kicked.”

Current Atlanta Hawks forward Marvin Williams led the Blue team with 30 points, while James Michael McAdoo paced the White team with 22 points.

The White team started McDonald, Bullock, Desmond Hubert, James Michael McAdoo and Luke Davis at point guard. The Blue team’s lineup included Williams, Raymond Felton, Marcus Ginyard, Deon Thompson, Reyshawn Terry and David Noel.

McAdoo offered a simple explanation for the loss: “They’re pros and we’re still in college. They’re pretty good.”

“We made it to 40 first – that counts – and in the second half they just imposed their will on us,” he continued.

Bullock provided more insight into the loss, which seemed eerily reminiscent of issues from last season.

“The first half they was up a little bit on us and we just kept fighting to come back,” the junior wing said. “The second half we started dying down, they start hitting a lot of threes [and] we weren’t getting back on defense. They was getting a lot of open threes, so as me being a leader being out there with them, I definitely have to set the tone and let them know we have to get back on every possession. We can’t give up open threes.

“It just seemed like the counselors wanted it more than we did and they definitely had more energy on the defensive end of the floor and they shouldn’t.”

It’s not as though the current roster expected to roll the veterans. McAdoo, in particular, understands that these pickup games represent the starting point of his team’s growth.

“It was different, because last year we had four guys that were going to play in the NBA on our team, so we’re still just trying to find ourselves right now,” he said. “We’re just trying to learn and come together as a team.”

That willingness to learn is what makes these summer contests so valuable.

“When the pro players come back, they’re competing,” Bullock said. “They’re trying to kill us just like we’re trying to kill them. I learn so much from the players. Every time I’m on the court I want to guard the best player. Guard point guards like Raymond Felton, guard Shammond [Williams], whoever is out there. Rey Terry, even though he’s in the post, he’s a lot bigger and stronger than I am, just being able to compete against those guys...

"I know I won’t see those type of players in the ACC, so if I can actually stay in front of them and learn certain moves they do it’ll help me a lot on my game.”

As for the early preseason polls that are already a month old, they carry no value for this young group. After all, the freshmen will not arrive on campus until next week and it may be August before Dexter Strickland is fully cleared to play.

“I think it’s kind of early right now to start thinking about expectations,” McAdoo said. “I feel like once we get the freshmen here, we’ll get a whole lot better feel for the team. And then once we start getting workouts in and practicing, I feel like that’s when we’ll really be able to gauge how good we can be.”

That doesn’t make Wednesday’s defeat any more tolerable.

“Yeah, they got us,” McAdoo said. “We’re looking forward to hopefully redeeming ourselves.”

NOTES/ANALYSIS

* Bullock took a lot of shots, but they weren't bad shots - mostly jumpers and his patented one-handed runner/floater. His game doesn't really include taking it all the way to the rim, but that runner can be really effective, especially if he doesn't have to create it all on his own. And that raises the biggest takeaway from this game: the White team didn't have any true creators. Bullock was the most effective of the bunch, and is the most well-rounded playmaker of the bunch, but none truly fit the rule of being able to create whenever its needed. In other words, a quality facilitating point guard is necessary as is an effective offensive system. But back to Bullock - he was all over the boards on both ends, made some good passes and his movement off the ball helped spacing.

* McDonald's numbers probably look better than his performance - and Ginyard (who looked leaner and quicker than memory serves) played some really tough defense on him when he tried to drive - but he had some moments. His threes looked good when they fell, though some of the misses were well off, and he made two really good passes to Bullock for baskets. The scoop lay-in through traffic was also a thing of beauty. Perhaps this is holding him to too high a standard because he was so good in viewings last summer (and teammates continue to praise his scoring performances early this summer). As with Bullock, in a more structured system to get him spacing and looks, and a high level point guard to set him up, he'll be more efficient than in a setting like this.

* Davis is sneaky with his baskets. He's not often looking to score, so perhaps that lulls the defenders to sleep, but he had two quality drives for layups, one in which he cut through the lane and the other where he faked out the defender. He doesn't stand out as a floor leader, but is solid and stays within the role, and can't imagine more than that will be asked of him this season.

* Hubert didn't look to score in the game last week, and today he did make some attempts in the post. His offensive moves have a long ways to go, but being willing to use his developing post game is the first step to gaining confidence and improving in that area. There was one play where he was out ahead of the defense on the break but sensed a defender coming, and wasn't confident in being able to finish, so he slowed down to try and get a different angle and the defender caught up and stopped in, whereas if he'd continued the way he was going he'd have gotten the basket and/or a foul. His readiness/awareness on offense is also a work in progress and sometimes makes him seem to have worse hands than he actually does, as evidenced by his ability to rebound pretty well. The follow dunk is his most effective method of scoring right now and he's quite good at it.

* McAdoo is obviously not a back-to-the-basket player, with the majority of his offensive moves with him squared up to the basket (he hit some face up jumpers, including one that was pretty deep), but he twice hit lefty jump hooks today. He hasn't showed that in a game before. The first was very close to the rim on a put back, but the second was further out. He had two really impressive moves off the dribble - one in the open floor and the other from the top of the key driving to the hoop - and while neither were completed, they were evidence that he's developing that added dimension to his game. Watching McAdoo on offense, you can still see that isn't near the ceiling yet. Some of that is likely confidence, but it's also about fine-tuning what is a non-traditional skillset. Also of note, he swallowed up nearly all of the defensive rebounds in his area. One funny moment was late in the game when the Blue team was trying to get Stackhouse the winning basket and posted him up on McAdoo. Stackhouse made a strong move, crashing into McAdoo's chest and sending McAdoo reeling (he didn't stop reeling until he was out of bounds on the opposite end of the floor) and in doing so he earned an offensive foul call.

* Hairston's eval, in terms of three-point shooting, is pretty clear. When he's set and in rhythm, he shoots a high percentage. When it's a forced shot, the hurried jump back, or he kicks out his legs, the percentage goes way down. But that's old news (and he did some of all of the above today). What was more noteworthy were the repeated attempts to get to the rim. The first-half power dribble-by caught Green of guard, as everyone expects Hairston to launch shots instead of drive.

* Simmons wasn't much involved in the flow of the game when he was in. Got the ball in the post a couple times and passed out. The effort was there on the boards, but he didn't win many battles against the bigger bodies.

* White apparently hasn't found out yet where he's going for his mission, but will depart for it before the end of the summer.

If Leslie had fouled out we might have had a chance.
